Getting Married in Val d'Orcia, Tuscany: A Complete Guide

If you’ve ever seen an image of a wedding in Tuscany that struck and moved you at the same time — an iconic scene with rolling hills dotted with small villages, winding roads lined with cypress trees, and a stone farmhouse standing against the horizon — chances are you were looking at a glimpse of Val d’Orcia.

It is one of the most photographed, painted, and admired landscapes in the world. In my many years of experience, I believe it is one of the best places to get married in Italy. Not only because it is an enchanting place, where time seems to stand still, but especially because it is a location that will make your wedding truly authentic — in a way that no other place can.

Over the years as a photographer in Tuscany, I’ve photographed both weddings and elopements in Val d’Orcia countless times, in different locations, under a wide range of lighting conditions, and with many couples, each with their own unique personality and style.

Why Val d’Orcia?

The Val d’Orcia territory was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, recognized as a landscape that has remained virtually unchanged since the Renaissance — the same one depicted in many Sienese paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries.

In practice, this means a largely untouched and unspoiled land: no highways, no industrial zones, no tall buildings to disrupt these iconic landscapes. When you step out onto the terrace of a farmhouse, what you see is very similar to what a traveler would have seen five hundred years ago.

This preservation of the land, remaining largely unchanged for centuries, is an almost unique and rare characteristic, giving Val d’Orcia an atmosphere of peace and tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere.

From a photographer’s perspective, these landscapes offer something both unique and unusual: the light changes dramatically throughout the day and across the seasons, yet it almost always remains beautiful. Having worked in many places, both in Italy and especially in Tuscany, I can say it is truly special.

The light is stronger and more intense at sunrise, warmer as the day progresses toward sunset. I particularly love that brief moment after the sun disappears, when its light tints the sky pink, adding a magical touch to the photos captured in this extraordinary place.

The Best Venues in Val d’Orcia

The valley is home to some of Tuscany’s most sought-after wedding venues. Here are the ones I know best from my own experience photographing there:

• Castello di Ripa d’Orcia — a medieval castle above the valley floor, still owned by the same family that has held it since the 13th century. The tower and the internal courtyard are extraordinary. The views from the ramparts at golden hour are among the best I have photographed anywhere.
• La Foce — the historic estate near Chianciano Terme, famous for its cypress-lined driveway that appears in almost every ‘Tuscany wedding’ Pinterest board ever created. The garden, designed by Cecil Pinsent in the 1920s, is especially beautiful in May and June.
• Podere Il Casale — an organic farm in the hills above Pienza. Smaller and more informal than the others, it works particularly well for intimate celebrations and elopements. The food is exceptional.
• Agriturismo La Bruciata — in the Montepulciano area, with wine produced on-site and a quiet, unfussy elegance that appeals to couples who want something beautiful without the grandeur.
• Tenuta di Trinoro — one of the most private and exclusive properties in the valley, with its own acclaimed winery. Not for everyone, but unforgettable for the right couple.

The Best Time of Year in Val d’Orcia

Every season in Val d’Orcia has its own charm, and none of them is “wrong.” Different times of year suit different couples and create different photographic moods.

May and June: The hills are lush and green, wildflowers are in bloom, and the days are long. These months are popular for a reason — the landscape is at its most vibrant, and the weather is pleasant for guests. If you’re dreaming of those iconic, saturated Tuscan colors, this is your ideal season.

July and August: After the harvest, the fields turn golden. Midday light can be strong, but early mornings and late afternoons are magical. Temperatures can reach 35°C, so planning the timing of your photos is important.

September and October: My personal favorite time to photograph in Val d’Orcia. The harvest is in full swing, mornings often bring mist in the valleys, and the first cool nights bring amber and ochre tones to the landscape. October, in particular, offers a warm, directional light that feels almost cinematic — perfect for storytelling in your photos.

November to March: Quieter and cooler, sometimes misty in ways that feel truly magical. While not ideal for large weddings, the winter months are perfect for elopements, offering a sense of intimacy and calm that translates beautifully in photographs.

Logistics: Getting There and Getting Around

Val d’Orcia sits in the southern part of the Siena province, roughly equidistant from Rome (about two and a half hours by car) and Florence (about an hour and forty minutes). The main towns — Pienza, Montalcino, San Quirico d’Orcia, Castiglione d’Orcia — are well connected to each other by road but poorly served by public transport.

For international guests flying into Italy, the most practical approach is to fly into Rome Fiumicino or Florence, hire a car, and drive down. The roads through the valley itself are beautiful and worth taking slowly. The nearest train station with useful connections is Chiusi-Chianciano Terme on the Rome-Florence line; from there, it’s about thirty minutes by car to Pienza.

Most couples I work with in Val d’Orcia stay for several days and use the wedding as a reason to explore the region. The wine towns of Montalcino (Brunello) and Montepulciano (Vino Nobile) are both close by. So is the thermal town of Bagno Vignoni, with its famous hot spring pool in the main square.

What It’s Like to Photograph a Wedding in Val d’Orcia

I’ve been photographing weddings and other sessions in Val d’Orcia for many years, in every season of the year, and each time I return this place still manages to surprise me.

One of the unique characteristics of this landscape is how quickly it can change as the light shifts. Sometimes it only takes a few clouds moving across the sky for the entire scene to transform unexpectedly. Yet perhaps it is exactly this unpredictability that makes it such a fascinating photographic challenge for me.

Of course, this also means that couples who choose Val d’Orcia benefit from working with an experienced photographer — someone who knows how to read the light and use it to its full advantage when creating images.

The famous cypress road at La Foce, for example, looks completely different at five in the afternoon compared to seven in the evening. The courtyard at Ripa d’Orcia receives the last sunlight of the day in one specific corner for about twenty minutes. These are details that are worth knowing in advance.

Whenever I work in a new venue, I always try to visit it beforehand or at least arrive well in advance on the day of the shoot. This allows me to understand how the light moves through the spaces that will be most important during the wedding or the session.

I like to plan the photographs in broad terms, but never with a rigid schedule — just a flexible approach that allows us to adapt if necessary. My priority is always to capture the best possible light in a given place, because for my couples there is only one chance to capture that moment.

Planning a Wedding in Val d’Orcia: Where to Start

Val d’Orcia is a highly sought-after destination, and the most beautiful venues are often booked well in advance — sometimes even two years ahead. If you already have a particular property or venue in mind, it’s a good idea to contact them as soon as you have a tentative date for your wedding.

Working with a local wedding planner who knows the area well can be extremely helpful, especially if you are planning everything from abroad. Vendors — such as florists, caterers, and celebrants — can vary greatly in terms of quality and reliability, and having a planner who has already worked with them can make a real difference. As for photography, I choose to take on a limited number of weddings in Val d’Orcia each year, and the most popular dates (especially late May, early June, and October) are often booked many months or years in advance.
